*The first task is to take security precautions that should be provided for employee safety around the asphalt patching construction. For this purpose, necessary safety precautions must be taken by using vertical marking, warning plates and flags.

*The area to be patched is marked with a rectangular shape by a rope and the spray paint.

*Thanks to the these reference lines, the coating is cut in full depth. To this end, the asphalt diamond blades or the milling machines can be used.

*The coating is excavated and removed to a truck. When the filling material with low bearing capacity under the coat is hand-tightened, generally a snowball form is seen.

*It is important that the edges are cut as straight and smooth as possible. All free materials are removed with rakes and shovels and the pavement thickness is measured and recorded.

*Possible deflections can be observed by operating a suitable heavy equipment on the base layer. Potential areas where there may be weak soil is identified at this point, and if necessary it may be improvement.

*Type C-graded (non-cohesive soil) granular material should be used under the asphalt patching layer and has a maximum particle size of 25 mm. CBR value of this mixture should be at least 100%.

*Segregation is not allowed into the construction of the granular base and the granular material is spread into the patching area at the optimum moisture. The loose material is compacted by tandem rollers. While it is rolling, don’t let the kneading or the segregation. The percent of compaction measured by the nuclear moisture and density gauge must be at least 98%.

*Edge of the coating surfaces are cleaned with suitable air compressors.

*The emulsion (Type: CRS-1) as an adhesive material is applied on to the cleaned surfaces at 60 °C.

*Patching construction should generally be constructed from 1 April to 30 November. The paving temperature can range from 135 °C to 150 °C depending on the mix design, pavement thickness and air temperature.

*To determine the bitumen content and particle size distribution, samples should be taken from daily construction.

*If the air temperature begins to fall below 5 °C in the shadow and away from any artificial heat, and if it is raining or snowing and there is water, ice or snow on the pavement, patching construction should not be done.

*When the rolling is started, the temperature of the mixture should not be below 130 °C and the compaction should be finished before it falls below 80 °C.

*In order to prevent penetration of water and harmful substances into the joint, the hot applied joint isolation material is poured. This material should not flow at ambient temperature and must have the flexibility property that it should not stick to the wheel, and it must also be durable under all climatic conditions.

*The patching line should be closed to the traffic during the paving and the rolling processes, and after the last rolling, the traffic should not be passed on the pathcing layer until the ambient temperature is reached.
