Did you know that childhood UV exposure plays a major role in your lifelong skin cancer risk? Your first 18 years of life are critical for preventing sun damage, but they should also filled with running round the playground with your friends!

The challenge? Making sure outdoor play doesn’t come with a hidden cost.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect kids when they’re dangling from the monkey bars or soaring on the swings, is shade. Liz King (Cancer Council NSW), Andrew Turnbull (Chair, ShadeSmart) and Julie Marler (Co-Principle, Phillips Marler Landscape Architects) chatted with us about their own views on why shade is so essential- and how we can make it happen everywhere.

Whether it’s planting trees, building shade structures, or planning smarter playground designs, we can - and must- make outdoor spaces safer for the next generation.
