Clint Malarchuk was an NHL hockey goalie for the Buffalo Sabres. On March 22, 1989 he made history when an opponents skate sliced the right side of his throat leaving him inches away from death. The work of the athletic trainer Jim Pizzutelli (former US army combat medic) saved his life.

Clint had cut through his jugular vein and surrounding tissues and muscles. He was lucky in that the cut missed his internal carotid artery by a few millimetres. Unfortunately Richard Zednik suffered a similar injury in 2008. The effects of this injury really did take a toll on Malarchuk's mental health. He speaks about this is detail at events.

I review the footage and go over the anatomy of the structures involved in his injury.
