Hi everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Rhino-Rack standup paddleboard and kayak carrier and seeing how it fits on top of our 2022 Ford Maverick. Now this is going to be a saddle-style carrier. What that means is you've got these four pads with the articulating joints. And you're gonna have two on each crossbar, kind of cradling the boat in by the bottom. All the straps help hold it down into those and you can see how it flexes around the boat and gets a really strong hold on it overall.

I will say this is one of the more stable styles of carrier right next to J-Style, those are my two favorite. This one does take up a lot more room on the roof rack though, but it's gonna do a lot better for some heavier boats and I think it's easier to load if you're doing it by yourself. We'll get into the loading process a little bit later and seeing how it's a bit easier. But for now, let's check out the strap kit. The main two straps are gonna be around the body of the boat here and they're gonna be standard cam buckle straps.

They've got thick rubber padding all around the cam buckles though, and hook and loop to hold all of your excess strap in place. So it's very easy to get this neat and tidy. The rubber is going to protect both your boat and your vehicle if it maybe drops on your vehicle whenever you're getting it all set up. And it's wrapping underneath our crossbars, holding the boat down and in place. And you can see again it's very solid here.

They're not getting any movement in the carrier whatsoever. Now the bow and stern straps are gonna be again, cam buckle straps. These ones aren't as nice. They don't have any sort of rubber padding around the cam buckles there, so you will need to be careful when you're setting this up that you don't drop it on your paint because there isn't any protective layer there. You still get that hook and loop to tie up the excess strap and these are very long straps.

So if your tie down point is further away, you've got the room to do it. But for a Maverick today, we didn't need all that length. It just loops through a secure point on your boat or your paddle board. And then down to a secure point on your vehicle, which for the Maverick we don't have a super solid spot. So we're actually using one of Rhino-Rack's hood anchors. You can pick those up separately, shut that in the hood and that gives you a strapped to loop through for the front end. Moving down to the back end though, we do have a pretty solid point really anywhere in the bed that there's a tie-down point. So for us, it's just going right down to the corner into one of the many tie-downs to get a secure fit. Getting everything unloaded is very simple, it's just a matter of getting the straps undone and taking them off of all the sides. I like actually do the bow and stern first. And then we can do the main straps on the hole of the boat last. And then the main body straps are the exact same process. Making sure that we get those fed off. Careful to not hit the vehicle. And then repeating on the other side. With everything unstrapped, I'll show you a little bit of a closeup of what we're gonna see here. These saddles actually rotate side to side so we can do a very easy side loading process. I just wanted to show you that closeup before we get into our wide shot where it's a bit harder to see. But that's gonna help for both loading and unloading. What I'm gonna do is actually get the boat towards me just a little bit and start to pivot that. That will bring it towards me, where eventually I can support the weight of that on my own and walk it away. And then the same thing for loading it up. We've got it prepped. I can set it into place, and then push it over and slide it into position. So you can get it set to your boat as far as width goes, because you can set these anywhere on the cross bars and that pivoting action helps us load it up or unload it whenever it's time. One thing I will say with the loading process is depending on the weight of your kayak, it might not be as easy. A lot of people like this style of carrier for things like fishing kayaks, because there are quite a bit larger, and J-style carriers and other styles don't always work as well for those. But with that, it's going to be a lot heavier. So getting it
