Mystery Flight: Did Assad Escape? Syrian Ilyushin-76 Flight Goes Off Radar After Damascus Takeoff

A plane reportedly carrying Syrian President Bashar al-Assad disappeared near Homs shortly after taking off from the Damascus International Airport. According to the Axios report, a Syrian Ilyushin-76 plane suspected of carrying Assad departed Damascus airport shortly before the rebels entered the capital city. According to FlightRadar, the plane made its way northwest and then turned near the city of Homs and rapidly decreased its altitude before disappearing. Meanwhile, the Syrian rebel groups declared Damascus "free of tyrant Assad" on December 8.
