Theni District was established through the division of the former Madurai District, as stated in G.O.Ms.No.679 of the Revenue Department, dated 25.07.96. This division resulted in the creation of a new Revenue Division with its headquarters in Uthamapalayam, along with two new Taluks in Theni and Bodinaickanur, effective from 01.01.97. The first collector of Theni District was Dr. K. Satyagopal IAS. Until 31.12.96, Theni Municipal town served as a firka headquarters. However, with the formation of the new District, Theni Municipal Town was upgraded to become the Taluk and District headquarters from 01.01.97. Primarily a commercial town, Theni is renowned for its bustling weekly shandy held every Sunday. Tourist attractions in the area include the Vaigai dam and Kumbakarai falls in Periyakulam Taluk, as well as the Suruli falls in Uthamapalayam Taluk. Notable Hindu temples in the region include the Gowmariamman Temple in Veerapandi Village (Theni Taluk) and the Saneeswara Bahavan Temple in Kuchanur Village (Uthamapalayam Taluk). Additionally, the Kannagi temple, located on the interstate border, hosts a one-day festival during Chitra Pournami day.
