Bratislava Castle is a very pronounced structure in the Slovakia's capital of Bratislava and can be seen from a great distance. It's almost guaranteed that if you are visiting Bratislava, at some point you will notice the castle perched upon the hill (85 meters above the water level of the Danube).

It served as an important fortified settlement at the end of the 9th century. The first written reference to Bratislava is from 907 is which mentions a battle between the Bavarians and early Magyars under the Brezalauspurc Castle. First, there was a pre-Romanesque stone palace in the 11th and 12th century on the castle hill. A major reconstruction of the castle started in 1423 and the result of this reconstruction was a Gothic castle referred to as a "Sigismund`s castle". Reconstruction of the castle called the Pálffys reconstruction was carried out in the period of the fading Renaissance style.

Maria Theresa was responsible for completing the last stages of big building alterations at the castle. In her efforts, she had all fortifying elements of the Pallfys castle removed and simultaneously improved or extended its residential functions complying with the criteria of what was then considered the utmost luxury.

A fire occurred in May 1811 and the ruins of the burnt castle set dormant for the next 150 years. The reconstruction of the castle was not completed until 1968.

The Bratislava Castle is the seat of the Museum of History of the SNM. It cares for and displays collections of items that primarily includes: historical furniture, visual arts, clocks, historical glassware, porcelain and ceramics, dress accessories and objects from silver.
