Gabe has been experiencing chronic and massive nosebleeds for most of his life. We've tried everything. The humidifier, aquaphor, and saline spray. Nothing has helped. We knew there would be no way for him to have his nose cauterized because he would not tolerate anyone touching or examining his nose so we let it go until we couldn't anymore. Luckily Gabe's pediatrician happened upon an ENT who was actually willing to cauterize his nose under anesthesia. This is something the doctors at Children's Hospital were unwilling to do. Thankfully this doctor understood he couldn't live this way and wanted to help!
To prepare Gabe I brought him to the surgical center to meet the nurses and to pick up an anesthesia mask that he could practice putting over his nose and mouth.
The night before his procedure, Caroline explained what would happen the next day and showed him how to use the mask.
The morning of the procedure we made sure Gabe was relaxed by giving him a little extra medication. At the surgical center he was able to take a special liquid medication to relax him called Midazolam. Once that took effect Caroline got her scrubs on and was allowed to go to the OR to assist in getting Gabe ready for the procedure. It was still not easy for Gabe to relax, but it got done.
The ENT let us know that he was able to cauterize both sides, but there was a lot of bleeding on the right side. He mentioned that Gabe may need surgery to repair a deviated septum as well.
After returning home Gabe was back to himself and we have been trying to keep him from touching his nose. This is the hard part.
The doctor prescribed an ointment to be sprayed up each nostril and saline spray twice a day! #autism #surgery #nonverbal #nonspeaking #anesthesia
