My name is Taylor Rausch, creator of Bear’s Breath, ketchup for the Bold. The idea came from parents who were supportive. I graduated college and had trouble finding a job and it really therapeutic to cook, that was how it really got started. I was able to make a ketchup that someone besides my mom liked. She brought the red ketchup bottle to work and her coworker wanted to take it to her husband. To know that I could possibly have something that people liked was extremely motivating. Starting a small business is a unique opportunity because you have an ability to problem solve and learn at your pace with things that you’re interested in. One of those learning curves was getting a barcode. And so, we ended up getting a third-party barcode for pennies on the dollar and it wasn’t something that was going to allow us to break through to a major retailer. GS1 has allowed us to conceptualize that, make it real, and now be able to distribute it accurately and correctly. Seeing my product on the shelf for the first time, with the barcode, with the colors, it was very unique. It could be in their kitchen, it could be something they use at a barbecue or a birthday party and the only the only way they were going to be able to get that was through having that barcode there. If you’re starting a business, you’re not going to hit it out of the park your first time. You might not hit it out of the park your first 5 times, but the person that keeps going is the one that’s going to hit the most homeruns. I probably got a few burns that won’t go away because I’ve made so much boiling ketchup, those are things I wouldn’t trade for the world now.
