Cheap drones, loitering munitions and cruise missiles are rewriting the rules of air defense over Ukraine. Firing a million-dollar missile at every flying lawnmower is not a strategy. That’s why Germany and Rheinmetall are sending this: the Skyranger 35.

In this documentary-style breakdown, we explain how Skyranger turns a classic idea – gun-based air defense – into a 21st century drone killer. Built around a 35 mm KDG revolver cannon firing programmable AHEAD ammunition, Skyranger can put up to 1,200 rounds per minute into the sky, creating a moving steel dome of tungsten fragments around whatever it protects.

Mounted on Leopard 1 tank chassis or Boxer 8×8 vehicles, the unmanned turret carries its own AESA radar, EO/IR sensors and optional Stinger-type missiles, letting it hunt drones, loitering munitions and low-flying cruise missiles on the move or from static positions.
