Suicide Prevention Australia CEO Nieves Murray says while the economic cost of suicide in Australia is $30 billion annually, this fails to take into account the emotional and social cost to the community.

A report released by the Productivity Commission into mental health revealed mental illness and suicides cost the country up to $200 billion each year.

Ms Murray said “the emotional and social cost of losing over 3,000 lives every year in this country is an issue we really need to address as a nation”.

She went on to point out “not everyone who dies by suicide has a mental health issue”.

"It’s other life factors that influence the risk of suicide such as a job loss, a relationship breakdown, housing instability or economic hardship,” Ms Murray told Sky News.

“Mental ill health is just one dimension that can impact somebody’s risk of suicide."
