Soon after the September 11 attacks on the United States, a US-led coalition invaded Afghanistan and started fighting with Taliban militants who were in control of the country. The bloody conflict starting in 2001 has dragged on for 18 years, becoming the longest war in US history.Peace talks finally started in 2018, and after nine rounds of negotiations in Qatar, the US government and the Taliban appeared to be close to a deal. But on September 7, 2019, US President Donald Trump called off negotiations, two days after a Taliban attack which took the lives of 11 people, including a US soldier.Against this backdrop, the Afghan government – which the Taliban denounces as a puppet of the West – held a twice-delayed presidential election on September 28, 2019. The results remain pending.
