After I lost my wife, Clara... I was basically a ghost, in my own house. To keep my hands busy, I bought this old, heavy, oak workbench, at a neighborhood estate sale. It was scarred, and covered in layers of dust... just like me.
One night, while I was sanding down the legs... I found it. A tiny, hidden compartment, tucked away behind a drawer. Inside, was a crumpled piece of construction paper.
It was a hand-drawn map. At the top, in messy, purple crayon, it said... "Map to the Secret Treasure for Daddy... since he’s in the stars now."
My heart just... dropped. I knew that feeling... of looking for someone who isn't there. The map led to a specific oak tree, in a park three towns over. I couldn't explain it, but I felt like I HAD to go
That Saturday, I drove to the park. I found the tree... and sitting right there on the roots, was a young boy, maybe seven years old... and his mom. They looked... exhausted.
I walked up, feeling like a total stranger, and showed them the paper. The mom’s eyes filled with tears, instantly. She told me her husband had built that workbench, but they’d had to sell it when they moved into a smaller apartment, after he passed away. Her son, Leo... had been heartbroken, because he forgot where he’d hidden his "treasure" for his dad.
We spent the afternoon digging... and we found it. A small tin box, filled with old baseball cards, and a picture of their family.
I didn't just give them a map that day. I found a reason, to start living again. Three years later... Leo calls me "Pops"... and I finally have a home that doesn't feel empty anymore. Sometimes... the things we lose... find a way of bringing us exactly where we need to be.
