The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 SUV brings serious performance and luxury to the premium electric SUV segment. As the high-performance variant of Mercedes' new electric flagship SUV, the EQS 580 packs a potent dual-motor powertrain making 536 horsepower and 633 lb-ft of torque. In our testing, this prodigious output rocketed the EQS 580 to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. For context, that's quicker than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
But the EQS 580 SUV is more than just a straight-line star. Its advanced air suspension and rear-axle steering provide surprising agility and poise for such a large vehicle. While not quite a driver's SUV, the EQS 580 handles twisty roads respectably while serving up a luxuriously smooth ride befitting its six-figure price tag.
That luxury experience starts inside the EQS SUV's exquisitely crafted cabin. Virtually every surface is covered in rich leather, wood, and metal accents creating an ambiance of modern opulence. The standard 56-inch Hyperscreen spans the entire dash integrating the digital gauges and infotainment controls into one massive curved glass panel.
While visually striking, the lack of physical buttons takes getting used to and some functions are buried a bit too deep in the menus for our liking. Still, build quality is exemplary and the front seats offer sublime comfort thanks to heating, ventilation, and massage functions.
Speaking of comfort, the EQS SUV provides a spacious second-row and an available third-row for up to seven passengers. Cargo space is decent too at up to 31 cubic feet behind the second row. Just be aware that number shrinks significantly with the third row in use.
On the road, the EQS 580 doesn't feel quite as accelerative as its 4.0-second 0-60 time suggests. The sheer girth and 6,284-pound curb weight prevent any neck-snapping sensation off the line. But there's never a shortage of passing power and top speed is a typical 131 mph.
The trade-off for that prodigious power is driving range that trails the lighter, less potent EQS 450 models. The EPA rates the EQS 580 for 285 miles but in our real-world 75-mph highway test, we managed 290 miles - about average for a large luxury EV. Fast charging at up to 200 kW does help mitigate range anxiety.
Priced from $128,500 in Premium trim, the EQS 580 isn't cheap, though Mercedes loads it with goodies like massaging seats, a head-up display, and Burmester audio. Our Exclusive tester rang up at $140,150 with extras like 22-inch wheels and an upgraded interior.
If you want the ultimate in electric Mercedes comfort and power (and you have the means), the 2024 EQS 580 SUV is tough to beat. It brings Benz's renowned luxury to the EV space with acceleration to humble many sports cars. Just be prepared to charge regularly to keep its big battery pack juiced.
