Pioneer Leader and First Khiamniungan MLA Mongchua Khiamniungan Passes Away; Community Mourns.

Mongchua Khiamniungan, a pioneering political leader, the first elected MLA from the 57th Thonoknyu Assembly Constituency, and the first MLA from the Khiamniungan community, passed away at the age of 87 on January 26, 2026. He breathed his last at Poly Clinic, Tuensang, following a brief illness. His demise marks the end of a significant chapter in the political and social history of Eastern Nagaland.
Born in Pathso Nokeng, Mongchua Khiamniungan was a man of many firsts. In 1973, he became the first matriculate from Pathso Range, inspiring generations at a time when access to education was limited. In 1974, he created history by becoming the first MLA and Minister from the Khiamniungan community after winning the Thonoknyu seat, giving his people their first representation in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Beyond politics, he played a vital role in community leadership. He served as President of the Khiamniungan Students’ Union, Noklak Headquarters (1971–1972), held key positions in the Tuensang Town Council, and led various Khiamniungan organisations over the years. He later served as President of the Khiamniungan Tribal Council (2014–2017) and as a Central Executive Committee member of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO). He also served as President of BJP, Tuensang District (2000–2003).
Fondly remembered as kind, generous, and soft-spoken, Mongchua Khiamniungan was known for his humility and people-centric approach. Though a towering public figure, he remained grounded and compassionate throughout his life.
He was laid to rest at his private residence in Pathso Nokeng, with thousands paying their final respects. Condolences have poured in from individuals, organisations, and political parties across the state.
Mongchua Khiamniungan will be remembered as a visionary leader, educationist at heart, and a lifelong advocate of his people, whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.
