A Stand-Up Paddleboard Tour Among Traditional Fishing Boats in Da Nang
In the afternoon, I prepared for a stand-up paddleboard tour near a traditional fishing village in Da Nang. This area is famous for its fishing community, and on that day there were more than 300 traditional fishing boats gathered near the shore.
After getting ready at my hotel near a Japanese restaurant, I carried my paddleboard down to the beach. I did some light stretching and warm-up exercises, then carefully entered the water. I checked the wind direction and decided to paddle toward the fishing village, where over 200 fishing boats were floating close together.
As I paddled along the shoreline, I noticed two fishermen working with a fishing net near the beach. One man stood on the shore holding the net, while the other walked slowly into deeper water. Together, they formed a wide half-circle with the net. When they began pulling it back toward the shore, I paddled closer to observe.
Small fish suddenly started jumping out of the net while I was paddling nearby. I became curious and decided to land my board on the sand. I placed my paddleboard on the beach and walked over to watch. The fishermen were pulling in the net, and I could see many small fish already caught inside. They placed the fish into baskets—there were many small fish, maybe five or six types.
After watching for a while, I paddled again along the beach. I reached the stream area where I had landed in the morning. There, I saw a basket boat carrying three or four fishermen moving toward a main fishing boat offshore. The basket boat floated smoothly over the water, and small fish sparkled as they jumped on the surface around it. The scene was beautiful and peaceful.
Near the stream area, there were small, long waves. I waited patiently and chose the right wave. I caught one wave and surfed about 20 meters without falling. I stayed balanced and continued paddling through the fishing boats.
Farther out, I saw a team of three fishermen preparing a large traditional fishing net. Their main boat had a tall triangular wooden structure, about 7 meters high, supporting a very wide net. Around them were more than 30 blue traditional basket boats, floating together like a single unit, perfectly harmonized with the sea.
Each fisherman had a role: one acted as the captain, while the other two managed the large fan-shaped net. When they began sailing, they lowered the net into the water and moved against the current. This method is used to catch small fish that swim in groups. Watching them work was fascinating.
I knew that at night they would use bright lights on the boats, because many fish are more active in the dark. With this method, they could catch a large amount of fish.
On my way back to shore, I carefully waited for one strong wave. I didn’t want to fall into the water because my clothes would get wet. When the right wave came, I balanced carefully and rode it all the way in. The water splashed over my face, but I didn’t fall. It was an amazing feeling, and I noticed people on the beach watching me.
I landed safely and rested on the sand. That afternoon paddleboard tour among the fishing boats became a special memory. For one month, I paddled twice a day, every day—training my body, improving my balance, and growing stronger through both good and difficult days.
