The UK and Mauritius have reached a historic agreement regarding the Chagos Archipelago, with the UK ceding sovereignty while allowing Mauritius to resettle Chagossians (excluding Diego Garcia). The UK will create a trust fund for Chagossians and maintain Diego Garcia as a military base for 99 years. This resolution is significant for Western commitment to a free Indo-Pacific and could prevent Mauritius from seeking alliances with countries like China. India supports Mauritius's claims, having voted in its favor at the UNGA, and has strengthened ties with Mauritius amidst China's growing influence in the Indian Ocean.
