Deadly Cholera Outbreak in Ethiopia

The ongoing drought has led to a deadly cholera outbreak in southern Ethiopia.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection caused by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, spreads rapidly in communities without access to safe, clean water and sanitation. Children living in drought conditions are particularly at risk.

UNICEF and partners are working to stem the spread of the disease, setting up cholera treatment centers (CTCs) to provide emergency care for infected patients, organizing community awareness activities and delivering safe water and water treatment supplies.

"We have treated more than 200 patients," says Abdulbaarii Muhamed, a health officer in Melka Buta, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. "This CTC is too small compared to the population here, so we need to expand it and we need additional manpower, as the number of patients is increasing by the day. Our message is that we need special support, and we need your help."
