Program Notes
Within a week I had a commission for both a bass trombone and tuba solo with brass quintet. Rather than writing two separate works, I thought of adapting the French system and writing a work that could be utilised by both instruments. This idea also extended to the bass part of the quintet so that the work can be played on a tuba or trombone so as to provide maximum performance flexibility.

The 1st movement is a modified sonata form with the development section replaced by a cadenza followed by a short recapitulation. The opening is a battle between the soloist and ensemble, the former in 3/4 time and the latter answering in 6/8. The 2nd subject leads to a more gentle and amicable interaction between the soloist and various parts of the ensemble building to the cadenza and a short restatement of the opening material.

The 2nd movement is entitled “In Chiesa” (in church) as the main theme is reminiscent of plainchant. There is a constant development of the theme through a variety of keys leading to a climax of syncopated rhythm in the solo part followed by cascading scales in the trumpet part. The mood of the opening returns to provide a somber conclusion.

The 3rd movement is in the form of a rondo. The whimsical and busy character of this piece provides a lighter contrast to the other movements. The thematic material for each section is introduced by the soloist supported by the ensemble, becoming more animated during each section’s development. A short coda brings the work to a conclusion.

The work currently exists in versions with brass quintet, piano or chamber orchestra.
