Rick Goff, was a police officer in the area and her family was beloved by their community. On January 17, 2008, Denise made a call to her husband Nathan Lee while he was at work, discussing the pleasant weather and her desire to open the windows for fresh air. When Nathan returned home later that day, he discovered that Denise was missing and immediately called 911 to report her disappearance.

A neighbor reported seeing a dark green car leaving the Lee's driveway around 2 PM that day, driven by an odd-looking man. It was later revealed that the man was Michael King, a plumber known for his aggressive nature and previous job losses. King had been keeping an eye on Denise for some time before abducting her and taking her to his home in North Port, Florida. Witnesses reported seeing King driving in the direction of North Port with Denise in the car.

Once at King's home, he took Denise to a "rape room" where he had accumulated various items such as duct tape and ropes. After raping her, he took her to his cousin's home where he demanded a shovel, gas can, and flashlight. Denise was able to take King's phone from the car seat and called 911 at 6:14 PM, pleading for help and telling the operator that she had been abducted. Despite Denise's clear distress, the operator seemed to question her rather than providing immediate assistance.

Sadly, Denise's call for help was never heard in time. King ultimately murdered her and buried her body in a shallow grave. He was eventually arrested and sentenced to death for his crimes. The case raised many questions about the effectiveness of the 911 dispatch system and the need for improved training and protocols for emergency operators. Denise's tragic story serves as a reminder of the importance of taking all emergency calls seriously and responding with urgency and compassion.
