Скачать или смотреть Chinese researchers develop tiny solar-powered drones for extended flight

Researchers at Beihang University in Beijing unveiled a tiny and ultra-light weight drone that can fly continuously, as long as it receives sunlight.

The CoulombFly weighs less than a piece of paper at about 4.2 grams.

Named after Coulomb’s Law, which describes the amount of force created when similar or opposite particles at rest repel, or attract each other, the drone features an electrostatic motor powered by natural light.

One researcher explains how it works.

It's not the first solar powered drone to be created, but it solves a few of the traditional problems for tiny-sized solar drones. One, it has lots of solar panels with plenty surface area to collect energy, and two, it has a motor that doesn’t overheat at high speeds.

Researchers say they expect their technology to be applied to drones for emergency rescue operations, narrow space detection or environmental monitoring scenarios, amongst others.

The team’s research study was published in the journal Nature.
