PoGB: Tensions rise in Shigar district amid protests over land rights

In the Shigar district of Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan, tensions are mounting as local residents protest a recent court ruling that classified the Sarfaranga Cold Desert as state land. This decision has provoked intense opposition from those who assert their historical claims to the region. After the court’s ruling on September 19, police were deployed to enforce it, leading to the demolition of local structures. In response, the local residents have come together to establish a protest camp.
