(1 May 2014) Hundreds of garment factory workers took part in a mass rally in Dhaka on Thursday to demand higher wages as well as safer and better conditions at work.
More than 1100 people died in April last year when the illegally constructed Rana Plaza garment factory collapsed in Savar, the centre of the country's 20 billion US dollar garment industry.
The collapse of the eight-storey structure, which was the worst accident the garment industry has ever seen, focused worldwide attention on hazardous working conditions in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh pays some of the lowest wages in the world while churning out clothes for some of the world's leading retailers in the US and Western Europe.
