Ehrwald lies at the foot of the Wetterstein Mountains with the 2962 m high Zugspitze , at the basin of the Lermooser Moos , a former swamp landscape.
The Loisach flows past the town. The name may be derived from the Old High German eriro or erro wald , meaning "beginning of the forest". According to another view, the name means “old forest” or “ore forest”, which is not excluded given the nearby ore deposits.
