How to Prepare Your Child for Boarding School -2018

Home for a child is much more than a place where child lives with his parents. The two have perfect communication. Even a hint of an expression such a smile, surprise, frown, sullenness is able to communicate to either of them what does it mean. Often, child depends a lot on parents to go through the daily routine. If the child has an interaction with other people, parents are always there to guide the child.

However, once a child moves out of the four walls of home and in a boarding, where child is on his / her own, parents are just not there. He or she has to be a lot more independent not only for daily chorus, but also to plan and manage studies, play and entertainment time, kinds of friends and so on and communication needs to be more verbal. This is a huge change.

The first thing that is most important is to ensure that your child is ready for this change. The child may be excited or anxious or nervous or a combination of them. It is important to tell the child that such a feeling may be there in other kids too and is normal. Try to be positive and enthusiastic when you talk to the child. The child may be assured that how this change of environment may be good for his / her overall upbringing, which may not be available in schools closer to home.

When you are planning your child for boarding, they need to organize themselves in the school. Hence even in homes, parents need to encourage child to be independent and do their chorus such as making their beds, finishing breakfast timely and at desired place, arranging their books properly and doing home work timely on their own, having fixed timings for sports and entertainment, managing their clothes and almirahs, use washing machines, keeping and managing money and other belongings etc. It may be good idea to have a time table for everything including daily chorus.

As you draw close to the date of your child’s departure to the boarding, identify items that are close to the heart of your child and can be taken to the hostel, such as photos and mementos. These may help child feel comfortable and at home in the hostel. Have ready plans when you would be visiting the child – over the long weekends, at the end of the term etc. depending on hostel rules. If possible keep in touch using emails and letters.

In Indian environment, interaction of your child with other children, like from neighbourhood, friends and relatives, and their friends in the local schools, where the child studied before moving over to boarding school, help the child to adjust to other children in the hostel. This may be encouraged and child may be encouraged for group activities and advised to have healthy relationship with friends. This will help him / her to easily adjust with school mates in the hostel. Remember that your child is just like any other child in the boarding school and should adjust to his / her new environment.

Last but not the least, once the child moves to boarding school, keep in touch with the child as well as his / her teachers or other mentors in the hostel. But do not overdo it to avoid any negative impact on the upbringing of your child.
