Why investing in OPDs, partnerships and inclusive governance is essential for lasting change.

On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we celebrate progress—but also recognise the gap between commitments and reality. Like many countries, the Netherlands has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, but commitments are not always met.

Across six African countries, the We are Able! programme has shown how inclusive approaches to food security empower persons with disabilities, strengthen their organisations (OPDs) and engage local and national governments to create lasting change

This video highlights three pathways that make change possible:
1. Reducing stigma and empowering persons with disabilities at the community level
2. Strengthening Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) for advocacy and policy influence
3. Working with governments to adapt laws and create inclusive governance structures

Key lessons learned:
• Inclusion works when communities, OPDs and policymakers collaborate
• Persons with disabilities must have a seat at the decision-making table
• Sustainable change comes from capacity building, awareness, and partnerships

Collaboration is key. WaA! shows that when OPDs, NGOs, and governments work together, inclusion becomes reality.
