Today we are doing a professional cleaning procedure.
Patient presents like this. Patient comes for a dental professional cleaning every 6-12 months. Patient has a habit of drinking espresso, black tea and occasionally red wine. So we observe stain, plaque and calculus.

Generally on a dental professional cleaning appointment, we check for several things:

1. We ask the patient if they have any concerns with their teeth. Then we move onto the clinical check.

2. We check for any possible oral and facial pathology.

3. We check for caries. So all of the teeth are screened for caries.

4. Then we move on to check the supporting structures of the teeth, which are the gums, the periodontal ligaments and the bone. Of course we shouldn’t see any bone exposed but usually we have an updated patient x-ray to supplement our exam.

So on the periodontal examination, we measure the pockets around the teeth.

Pockets are the spaces between the gums and the tooth structure. If there is inflammation, bleeding or deep pockets, while we are checking, then we have to diagnose the problem and see why this is happening. This inflammation, bleeding and deep pockets can arise due to many reasons but a few common reasons are: Oral hygiene at home is poor; the patient does not get a professional dental cleaning systematically when suggested by the dentist. This leads to plaque and calculus build up and results in inflammation of the gums and bleeding, which then in turn affect the deeper structures that we call periodontal ligaments, and ultimately the supporting bone.

After we check the pockets and take notes, we move on to the cleaning procedure. First we remove all of the buildup that has been created above the gum line and usually this is done with the ultrasonic device, with which all of the stains are removed as well.

Then we move onto the hand instruments. We use the appropriate instrument for each surface of the tooth. perkatese

At the end, we polish, and then we floss all of the contacts between the teeth as well as give the patient the oral hygiene instructions.
