Ο ιταλικής καταγωγής συνθέτης και βιολονίστας Giuseppe Maria Cambini ήταν σίγουρα ένας από τους πιο παραγωγικούς συνθέτες του τέλους του 18ου αιώνα, με πάνω από 700 συνθέσεις. Ο Cambini γεννήθηκε πιθανώς τον Φεβρουάριο του 1746 στο Λιβόρνο της Ιταλίας. Οι πληροφορίες για τα πρώτα χρόνια της ζωής του είναι ελάχιστες, μαθαίνουμε όμως περισσότερα από τη στιγμή που μετακομίζει στο Παρίσι, όπου για τριάντα χρόνια είχε πολύ έντονη συνθετική δραστηριότητα, ακόμη και στα χρόνια της Επανάστασης. Μετά την αλλαγή του αιώνα, ωστόσο, οι κριτικοί έγιναν λιγότερο ευνοϊκοί μαζί του και σιγά σιγά εξαφανίζεται από το προσκήνιο και χάνουμε τα ίχνη του, μη γνωρίζοντας με σιγουριά ακόμη και την ημερομηνία του θανάτου του (ίσως το 1825).

Η μουσική του αποτελεί την επιτομή του γαλλικού style galant, και έγραψε πάνω από 600 καθαρά οργανικά έργα, ανάμεσα σε αυτά 149 κουαρτέτα εγχόρδων, 114 κουιντέτα εγχόρδων, εννέα συμφωνίες και πάνω από 100 τρίο για διάφορα όργανα.

The Italian-born composer and violinist Giuseppe Maria Cambini was certainly one of the most prolific composers of the late 18th century, with over 700 compositions. Cambini was likely born in February 1746 in Livorno, Italy. We know very little about the first years of his life, but we learn more about him by the time he moves to Paris, where for thirty years he was very active as a composer, even during the years of the Revolution. After the turn of the century, however, critics grew less favourable to him and he slowly withdrew from the scene. We lose track of him to the point of not even knowing the date of his death with certainty (it was perhaps in 1825). His music is the epitome of the French galant style, and he composed over 600 fully instrumental works, including 149 string quartets, 114 string quintets, 9 symphonies and over 100 trios for various instruments.
