A playthrough of Atari's 1992 beat 'em up for the Atari Lynx, Dirty Larry: Renegade Cop.

Dirty Larry, a cop who refuses to play by the book, has been ordered by the chief to take down a crime syndicate, and because Mr. Renegade Cop has destroyed so many police cars, he has to carry out his assignment on foot.

That's the setup for Dirty Larry: Renegade Cop, a wholly pedestrian take on the belt-scrolling brawler formula. Larry punches and shoots his way through waves of baddies - a collection of thugs, fat ladies, pimps, and the baseball clowns from The Warriors - on his way to the courthouse where he'll ultimately do battle with a corrupt judge.

I remember being impressed by the promotional screenshots in magazines - it looked like a Sega Genesis game, but running on a handheld! - and as was the case with a lot of Lynx games, the actual game turned out to be a massive disappointment. The art is nice, but animations and framerate are distractingly choppy, there's little variety in the selection of enemies and backdrops, and there's no in-game music. The controls are slow to respond, and your success relies on how well you've memorized each of the stages, just like the Lynx version of Batman Returns. Even by Lynx standards, Dirty Larry sucks.

But if you're determined to see the good in Bebe's Kids for the Super Nintendo, try playing this first!
