In 1870s Belgium, someone genuinely thought cats could deliver the mail.

The idea came from the Belgian Society for the Elevation of the Domestic Cat. Their plan? Train cats to act as tiny postal carriers between villages and the city of Liège.

Thirty-seven cats were equipped with waterproof pouches containing messages. They were released from nearby villages and expected to trot home like furry couriers.

A few did. One cat returned in under five hours.
But most? They napped, wandered aimlessly, or simply refused to cooperate.

It turns out cats make terrible employees—but great storytellers.

The experiment was never repeated. But it remains a charming reminder that, no matter how well-intentioned the plan, cats follow only one schedule: their own.
