Some of the rarest surviving 18th-century stained glass in our care has been fitted with ‘isothermic glazing’ to protect it from the ravages of weathering intensified by increasing rainfall and heat from the sun. The painted detail on The Vyne’s tomb chamber stained glass in Hampshire had begun to flake, the leadwork to warp and leak, and condensation to eat away at the surface of the glass.

The window, created by John Rowell and depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds after Van Dyck, spent six months at Holy Well Glass being cleaned under binocular microscopes, gently repaired, and its new glazing added in lead and hand-made glass.

The jewel-like glass is believed to be the most important surviving example of Rowell’s work. Originally a plumber, Rowell was a self-taught glass-maker and although accomplished, his paint was not durable enough to withstand the test of time and would ‘vanish’ from the glass. Very little of his work remains.
