After World War II, the Allied powers created the Nuremberg Trials, the first international court designed to judge political and military leaders as individuals under international law.

At the center of this moment was Robert H. Jackson, a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and chief prosecutor for the United States.
Jackson believed the trials were not about revenge, but about establishing a moral and legal standard for the future.

In his opening statement, he warned that the same principles used in Nuremberg must apply to all nations, even those who claimed victory. Without that balance, he argued, justice would lose its legitimacy.

The courtroom was temporary, but the ideas introduced there reshaped international law, human rights, and global accountability.
