No, Christian fathers working in government-funded schools in India are required to pay income tax. The Supreme Court of India ruled in November 2024 that Catholic clergy in government-funded schools are not exempt from paying taxes. This decision ended a tax exemption that had been in place since 1944.

The single bench had accepted the case of religious institutions that since priests/nuns have taken a vow of poverty as per which they have to surrender their personal income to the Church/Diocese, no income is effectively accrued to them so as to make it liable for taxation

The Supreme Court ruled that tax equality must apply regardless of religious vows or lifestyle.
The court also ruled that the salaries of nuns and priests are taxable because they are funded by government grants.
The court dismissed appeals from nearly 100 dioceses and congregations from Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The court reasoned that since there is income, there has to be tax.
The court said that the money is given to the school in the form of a salary grant and hence cannot be exempt from TDS.
