Montana won its second Division I-AA National Championship, beating Furman of the Southern Conference 13-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Let by the likes of running back Yohance Humphery, safety Vince Huntsberger, and quarterback John Edwards, Joe Glenn's Grizzlies enjoyed a 15-1 record. Following an early-season loss to Hawaii, Montana reeled off 14 straight victories en route to the 2001 National Championship.

The Big Sky Conference (BSC) is collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I, with football competing in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Member institutions include Eastern Washington, Idaho State, University of Montana, Montana State, University of North Dakota, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, and Weber State. UC Davis and Cal Poly are football-only participants. The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men's and women's basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, cross country, and tennis. There are championships in football and women's volleyball, golf, soccer, and softball.
