Listen, something absolutely wild just went down with Atlas, and if you've been keeping up with this story, you need to hear what happened on October 29th. This thing just passed its closest point to the Sun, and the data coming back is making scientists scratch their heads harder than ever before. We're looking at movement that doesn't match gravity alone, weird changes in where it should be versus where it actually is, and even Avi Lobe from Harvard is paying serious attention now. So buckle up, because this gets really interesting really fast.
When Atlas got closest to the Sun on October 29th, the ALMA telescope spotted something that raised immediate red flags. The object wasn't where calculations said it should be. It was off by four arcseconds. Now, you might think that sounds tiny, but in space terms, that's actually huge. What this tells us is that something other than the Sun's gravity is pushing or pulling on Atlas. And here's the thing, normal comets don't behave like this. On top of that, multiple solar observatories including SOHO and others caught Atlas doing something we've never witnessed before. It got brighter in a completely unusual way and turned bluer than the Sun itself. That makes nine strange things about this object that we can't easily explain.
But here's where it gets really crucial. If Atlas were just a regular comet doing this kind of acceleration, it would have needed to throw off at least fifteen percent of its entire mass.
