Edvard Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite

Morgenstemning, or Morning Mood, is the first movement of Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, a musical setting that accompanies Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. Composed in 1875, this piece has become one of Grieg’s most iconic works, capturing the serene and tranquil beauty of dawn. The music gently awakens with a soft, lyrical flute melody, gradually building in richness as the entire orchestra joins in, evoking the calm and peacefulness of the morning. Grieg’s masterful use of orchestral colors and dynamics allows listeners to vividly imagine the rising sun and the awakening of nature. Followed by Åses død (The Death of Åse), Anitras dans (Anitra's Dance) and I Dovregubbens hall (In the Hall of the Mountain King), the listener is taken on a journey along with Peer Gynt creating vivid, picturesque scenes throughout the suite.
