JBelly School of RAQ is a vibrant and inclusive dance community founded and led by Janelle Jalila Issis, an experienced dancer and teacher with a deep background in multiple dance forms and a passion for Middle Eastern bellydance, also known as Raqs Sharqi. Janelle began her journey in bellydance at age four, training in Classical Egyptian Bellydance under the mentorship of Aziza of Birmingham. She later developed her own distinctive "JBelly Style" during her college years at the University of Alabama, where she studied dance performance and nutrition.

The school emphasizes accessibility and empowerment through dance, welcoming people from all backgrounds to connect with their inner confidence and joy through bellydance. Janelle's mission is to help students cultivate self-love, body positivity, and professional-level skills, whether they aim to pursue a career or simply enjoy the art form for personal growth.

JBelly School of RAQ actively participates in events like the NYC Dance Parade, offering dancers the chance to perform and celebrate bellydance within the city's diverse dance landscape. The school also produces curated performances for special events, showcasing the artistry and cultural richness of bellydance.

The NYC Dance Parade is an annual celebration of dance diversity in New York City, attracting over 10,000 dancers representing more than 100 distinct dance styles. The event takes place in May and culminates in DanceFest, a free, multi-stage festival in Tompkins Square Park with performances, workshops, and interactive dance activities for the public. The parade route begins at 6th Avenue and 17th Street, moves through key locations like Astor Place, and ends at Avenue A, highlighting a mix of cultural and social dance forms from ballet and hip-hop to Middle Eastern and Latin American styles.

The Dance Parade began in 2007 as a response to a court ruling that social dance was not protected as expressive speech under the First Amendment. Since then, it has grown into a major nonprofit arts organization dedicated to promoting dance’s cultural diversity and community impact. The parade features over 70 floats and vehicles and draws more than 100,000 spectators, making it a significant cultural event in New York City.
