Ely Cathedral and Octagon Tower Tour (2019)

Описание к видео Ely Cathedral and Octagon Tower Tour (2019)

We visited Ely Cathedral on our recent trip to England. I remember it fondly from when I was stationed nearby over 20 years ago. We explored the Cathedral and took the official Octagon Tower tour.

Ely Cathedral dates back to 1083 and the Octagon was built in the 14th century after the original tower collapsed. It is celebrated as one of the most unique features of Ely Cathedral and built with a rare combination of stone and wood.

We did a brief walk through of the Cathedral before taking the tour. The tour lasts about one hour. It requires going up some narrow spiral staircases that you can see in the video. You briefly transverse the rood of the Cathedral where you get a great view of the fens.

After climbing another spiral staircase, you enter the attic of the octagon tower. There you can see the timber that was cut down in the 1300s to build the tower. The guide will then open up the 12 foot tall panels so that you can look down into the center of the Cathedral. It is awe inspiring to see the Cathedral from this angle and to see the infrastructure that has supported the octagon for over 600 years
