In Illinois, if a parent who has either equal parenting time or the majority of parenting time pursuant to a court order wants to move, certain laws are applicable. In general, there are distance restrictions that determine if the move is allowed without permission from the other parent or court order.

As of January 2022, there have been some modifications to the law, under 750 ILCS 5/603.5, in which "the court may order the relocation of the child on a temporary basis before the entry of a final allocation judgment if it is in the best interests of the child."
