International Humanitarian Law (IHL), also known as the law of armed conflict or the law of war, is a set of rules and principles that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict and protect individuals who are not or are no longer taking part in the hostilities. It is a branch of public international law that applies specifically to situations of armed conflict, whether international or non-international in nature. The main goal of international humanitarian law is to balance the military necessity of armed conflict with the protection of civilians, prisoners of war, and other non-combatants.
