Описание к видео Gettysburg Pennsylvania Downtown

Gettysburg
Town in Pennsylvania
Gettysburg is a borough and town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It’s known for Gettysburg National Battlefield, site of a turning point in the Civil War, now part of Gettysburg National Military Park. The park also includes the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center, displaying Civil War artifacts, and Gettysburg National Cemetery, where a memorial marks the site of Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Gettysburg Address
Visitors can find a variety of shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants lining the streets of downtown, leading right up to historic Lincoln Square. Whether you're looking for clothing, fine arts, collectibles or home décor, you'll find it in downtown Gettysburg. Lincoln Statue at Wills House
Just outside the Wills House you can see a highly realistic image of President Lincoln greeting a modern-day visitor. This life-size bronze statue, called the "Return Visit," is the work of J. Seward Johnson, Jr. The Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania placed it here in 1991.
It depicts Lincoln pointing to the house, as if he is explaining where he completed his Gettysburg Address. On the night Lincoln stayed here, a New York Tribune reporter wrote, "After supper the President was serenaded by the excellent band of the 5th New-York Artillery. After repeated calls, Mr. Lincoln at length presented himself, when he was loudly cheered." Lincoln, however, wisely declined to make a speech. Wills House Bedroom
President Lincoln visited Gettysburg without his family, having left his frantic wife and sick son behind in Washington. When Edward Everett wrote Lincoln after the event, he said, "I hope your anxiety for your child was relieved upon your arrival." By then his son had improved, but Lincoln had a mild form of smallpox.
Lincoln used the second-floor guest bedroom above David Wills' law office. Here he put the finishing touches on his carefully prepared Gettysburg Address, a speech he began writing in Washington. Despite old stories, it's not true that Lincoln wrote the speech on the train, much less on the back of an envelope. This picture was taken before the home was restored by the National Park Service.
Company K First Pennsylvania Reserves Monument in Gettysburg
When people travel to the Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania, they typically stick to the marked route map when doing the driving tour to see all of the Civil War monuments and memorials. However, you'll find all kinds of Civil War monuments in Gettysburg (downtown) and the surrounding area. Many are off the beaten-path, so-to-speak.
On one of our trips down to Gettysburg we located the Company K First Pennsylvania Reserves Monument in the downtown area. If you walk around Lincoln Square, you'll find it. Since it's related to our great state of Pennsylvania, I wanted to highlight the monument here on our blog.
Here's what the posted information has to say about it.
Company K
First Pennsylvania Reserves
Thirtieth Regiment
First (McCandless') Brigade
Third (Crawford's) Division During the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2nd, 1863, the men of Company K, in the center of the First Reserves, helped to repulse the Confederate attempt seize Little Round Top, possession of which was the key to victory in the battle.Recruited in Adams County, the men of Company K participated in 8 battles: Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill, Glendale, South Mountain, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Bethesda Church. The casualties sustained were 17 who died in service and 23 who were wounded.
When you're walking around the downtown business and shopping district in Gettysburg, you'll want to look for the various monuments that are located in the downtown area.
The Stoever-Schick Building
During the Battle of Gettysburg this Federal style building, erected in 1817, housed Professor Martin Stoever's family and J.L. Schick's general store. As a result of the battle the building hosted a variety of unusual events.
