LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- Out of the $5.75 million Western Technical College will receive, $2.2 million have been allocated towards education in manufacturing.

The grant is focused on creating short term credentials within their advanced manufacturing programs.

But you may ask yourself, what are short term credentials?

They're generally postsecondary programs requiring fewer than two years of schooling.

"What we're trying to do is two things. We're trying to create pathways for students to come into our programming, get one or two short term credentials, and be able to enter the workforce and dive right into work," said Liz Wallace, Director of Grants at Western Technical College.

"For incumbent workers who are looking to maybe pursue further education in advanced manufacturing," said Wallace.

If students already have some levels of education or competencies, they can enroll in the program and earn credits, making it easier to graduate sooner.

"If you get an educational pathway at western, it's going to be very similar or the same as the educational pathway at CVTC," said Wallace.

Wallace says the grant will impact both staff members and students.

"It will be an opportunity to increase collaboration at the instructor level between colleges, which is always a win," said Wallace.

The grant will be distributed to the nine recipient colleges over the next four years.
