Reuploaded this video, now with a crappier intro animation, after it was originally up for all of half an hour last Monday night. The original version’s intro animation, which my editor and I put a lot of time into, was deeply unpopular with the fans. People were transvestigating it to claim it was AI. It wasn’t, but I see why people thought that. As I’ve said before, I’m not opposed to generative AI on principle, but I never have and never will use AI in the creation of my own videos. Still, there was a deeper criticism that I felt had a point: whether or not it’s AI, that kind of anodyne infographic animation style is very un-Tor’s Cabinet of Curiosities. TCOC should look handmade, and that animation definitely didn’t look handmade. Some of my longtime fans were treating the animation as a genuine breach of trust.
I was pretty annoyed at first, but by now I think it’s funny & endearing that I had to deliberately make my production values worse to regain the trust of my audience. I liked the original animation. And I don’t think anyone would have hated it before the AI art moral panic. But I like this one too, and I think it fits the vibes of the kids’ loosely described alien encounter much better. The original version with the slicker, higher-production-value animation can still be watched on the Tor’s Cabinet Patreon.
