After four years of delays and a warning from CEO Elon Musk, Tesla's long-awaited 46 80 battery cell is finally set for production. With the development of a dry electrode by Tesla engineers, manufacturing can now proceed. Tesla manufacturing engineer Cole Otto confirmed in a LinkedIn post that the company is on schedule to start mass production of the 46 80 cells before the year’s end.

A video by The Limiting Factor on X shed light on the latest teardown of Tesla’s 46 80 cell, specifically from Sandy Munro’s Cybertruck analysis. This teardown revealed several improvements over the first-generation 46 80 cells.

One of the most notable advancements is the reduced weight of the 46 80’s casing, which dropped from 70 grams in Gen 1 to just 49 grams in Gen 2. Tesla achieved this by optimizing the casing design, making it thinner and less complex by welding the tabless electrodes directly to the cell cap.
