You'll notice us having to hold the boat outside the doors as requested by the lock master which took an usual long time to open. But once they did we entered heading up stream. Most likely you will miss it but a guy sends a hook down attached to a rope for us to hook our "lock line" (of about 100') on and they pull it up to hook around fixed points at the top of the lock wall. But first we have already tied one end of our line to our bow cleat and ran the line from there to the rear of the boat so when the lock master pulls our line up what we do is grab the end of our line at the aft of our boat and after they secure it we pull slack out which also pulls the boat safely into the lock wall. Where we can then ride up with the water level until it is level with the pool above which is around 15'-20' difference. As the the water rises (the lock fills up with water) we have to constantly pull in the slack of our line so we remain up against the lock wall. The waters can become turbulent inside the lock since there is basically huge valves that are opened to let water rush in. But they generally open the valves so its a smooth ride up. But you definitely need to be aware of what is going on to stay safe. We also try to leave a few beverages for the lock guys, a little tip never hurts anyone.

This is Lock & Dam #2 at Sharpsburg PA, Which is the Allegheny River's first of 9 Lock & Dams that keep the river levels at a constant navigable depth for commercial and recreational vessels. Now that most of the commercial traffic is limited due to the plants closing down we are increasingly under threat of these locks closing down as well. The locks further up the Allegheny are funded by donations alone because they lost federal funding since they are only used for recreational. The first 4 locks are still receiving federal funds but has cut back significantly and if repairs are needed on the locks it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Hopefully they will be able to remain open since there is a lot of recreational boating the entire navigable waters of this river. Now that the waters are also starting to clean up fishing has really took off around here and is seen happening many different ways like shore fishing, trolling and drifting quite often.
