Proud of the rich and diverse history at the Nines Hotel. The original building was created in 1909. Flocked in glazed terra cotta, the original 15-story building was completed in 1909 and served as the flagship store. The headquarters for Meier & Frank was once heralded as the largest retailer west of the Mississippi.
For decades, the retail dynasty created by Aaron Meier and Sigmund Frank was a long-standing hub of commerce for Portland. This iconic monument featured the first escalator installation in Portland and, in 1922, also functioned as the studio for Meier & Frank's very own radio station. As the premier department store in Portland, clientele would often dress up to look their very best, as this was (and still is) the place to see and be seen. At its peak, the Meier & Frank building had a pharmacy, a pet store, and a deli. Meier & Frank was also Clark Gable's place of employment before becoming a famous actor.
In 2005, the building began its transformation into a luxury hotel. The original exterior was retained, while a seven-story light-filled atrium was created to best access beautiful views and natural light. The architects created a thoughtful, modern approach, infusing elements from the worlds of art and fashion and eclectic nods to the Meier & Frank's retail past. The building is also LEED Silver Certified, in line with the sustainable values. The name "the Nines" was created in homage to the Meier & Frank Building's roots as a beacon of "dressed to the nines" fashion. Like the original Meier & Frank, which remains dedicated to providing impeccable service and an elevated experience.
The Nines Hotel features a bold curated art collection with over 400 distinct pieces. In addition, they feature a bold display of commissioned works exclusively created by local artists. The extraordinary collection, curated by Paige Powell, a former Warhol confidante, comprises over 400 pieces of art, including sculptures, paintings, and custom installations that grace the atrium, restaurant, library, lobby, and guest rooms.
All of the Portland luxury hotel rooms pay homage to the historical roots. Rooms are "dressed to the nines." Each room is literally "dressed to the nines" and features delightful design elements, including tall, over-scaled tufted ivory leather headboards and plush bedding. The curved lines of mercury lamps are reminiscent of mannequins, while the nightstand drawer pulls suggest elegant silver bracelets. The rooms also include elegant recamiers upholstered in Tiffany blue velvet, crystal pendant lights, and ivory-colored satin draperies. In addition, all guest rooms feature original art produced by students from the Pacific Northwest College of Art.
Enjoy two distinct and uniquely crafted renowned restaurants at the nines hotel. Urban Farmer, located in the lively atrium, is a modern steakhouse emphasizing sustainable ingredients and simple farm-to-table preparations. Departure, located on the 15th floor, offers contemporary Asian cuisine in a cosmopolitan setting and features two stunning rooftop patios with views of the surrounding area. Both on-site restaurants are Gold certified with the Sustainability at Work Program.
