I'll be showing you how to present like PewdiePie on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Visit https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/ to attend one of my FREE LIVE online trainings.
1. Finding and repeating your unique catchphrase helps you stand out from the crowd. (0:50)
If you’ve watched any of his videos, you must’ve heard the classic, PewdiePie, what’s fascinating about the way he says it is that he checks the boxes of pretty much every category of public speaking. He changes his pitch to make it sound funny, and his expressions whether it’s with his face or his hands match the catchphrase well. That leaves a memorable mark on viewers and its especially important given his niche because there’s so many gaming channels, Felix needed to find ways to help differentiate himself from the pack and give his viewers the best possible experience. This is how to present like PewdiePie.
The lesson here for all of us is that finding these little ways of differentiating ourselves makes us more unique and attracts the right type of people towards us, in the same way that if you want to “master your talk”, aka your communication skills, I want this to be the channel for anyone who thinks about public speaking and wants to get better at it, you need to start thinking about your niche and saying what are the strategies that are authentic and unique to me that I can use to bring the right people to come see my videos and learn from our ideas – let’s see what you got.
2. Spend time thinking about your public speaking brand & how to communicate it better. (2:16)
In any interview with PewdiePie, Felix is always honest about the fact that if you’re watching him play a game, it’s not to get better at it, but rather to be entertained, and he’s always been very clear about the type of YouTube show he wanted to have and how to communicate that during the show.
He swears a lot, he screams like a little girl for half of it, every part of his body is a different color from his white hair to the green headset, every part of the way he plays is both entertaining, but well thought through as well. He’s making intentional decisions to scream at specific moments, to change his vocal tones, and to be more quiet when he’s playing horror, everything PewdiePie does is crafted over years of speaking on camera even if he’s talking to no one, isn’t it odd that he’s so expressive when there’s literally no one in the room? This is how to present like PewdiePie.
That’s the point I’m driving for all of you. You need to spend just as much time practising your communication skills as you are thinking about what your ideal communication style looks like. That’s why I’m a big fan of simply finding speakers you admire and taking a little bit from everyone, that’s how you really start to build a unique public speaking identity in the same way Felix has done this in spades with his YouTube personality. This is how to present like PewdiePie.
3. True fans spread ideas, not average ones, so learn how to build strong relationships with them. (4:15)
Out of anyone I’ve featured on this YouTube channel, there is no one on Earth who has more super fans than Felix hence why I wanted to feature him to prove this important point. During his feud with the YouTube channel “T-Series”, a production company in India who ended up surpassing him in subscriber count, thousands of people around the world did crazy things to help PewdiePie stay ahead. Some examples include spending 1M to display his YouTube channel in Times Square to popular YouTuber Mr. Beast buying billboards in his entire city to someone flying out to India and replaying a music track in front of T Series’ headquarters, to say fans went the extra mile is an understatement, they went crazy for him.
Felix’s cult-like following is a great example of how to think about spreading your important ideas to the world. The people who think your ideas are OK, are not going to help bring it to the masses, as Kevin Kelly, the editor of Wired Magazine puts it best, spend all of your time and energy on the 1000 true fans who will do whatever it takes to help you succeed in your goals and as long as you have those true fans, they’ll help you bring your ideas to millions which is exactly how Felix quickly surpassed the 100M subscribers count on the platform. This is how to present like PewdiePie.
As always, if you enjoyed this week’s episode of MasterTalk, be sure to SMASH that LIKE button and SUBSCRIBE to the YouTube channel to see more videos like this, and if you know anyone who’s a fan of PewdiePie, send them this video so that they’ll be one step closer to I’m not really sure, but they might it somewhat educational, rather than just you know watching Felix all day, which is also cool.
