Back in the golden age of gaming, loading screens weren’t just a waiting period—they were a moment of anticipation.

A great example of this is Dragon Ninja on the Commodore 64. Released in 1988, this arcade port brought home the fast-paced action of the original Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja, complete with an iconic, gritty loading screen that set the stage for battle.

As we waited for the game to load from cassette, we were treated to a detailed pixel-art depiction of a fierce bad dude, before saving President Ronnie.

For us gamers in the '80s, these loading screens weren’t just filler; they were an experience. They built hype, set the mood, and often became as iconic as the games themselves.

It was a long way from playing this in a local night club after a few shandies, but, just watching a game load can bring back memories.
