In this Farm Monitor feature, we revisit the life and legacy of Bob Izlar, the 2025 Georgia Farm Bureau Commodity Award winner. From his childhood in South Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp to his leadership in forestry education and advocacy, Izlar’s story is one of passion, persistence, and purpose.

After serving in the military, Izlar spent decades fighting for fair taxation on agricultural and forest lands, eventually becoming the founding Director of UGA’s Harley Langdale Jr. Center for Forest Business. Along the way, he partnered with organizations like the Georgia Forestry Association and Georgia Farm Bureau, all in defense of Georgia’s rural way of life.
