Abortion by mail is actually not new at all, especially with strict abortion laws in many countries. For many women around the world getting their abortion pills delivered by mail is the only way to make their own choice.

Every year 42 million women choose to have an abortion and 25 million of all these abortions are unsafe. That is a big number! These unsafe abortions are one of the most common reason of injury and death among women.

Unsafe abortions are mostly happening in countries where abortion is illegal or hardly accessible. Mostly they are done by women themselves or with the help of non-medical assistance. What desperate women do? They use drastic methods-from lifting heavy weights, exposing themselves to extreme temperatures, belly flopping onto a hard surface, or throwing themselves down a flight of stairs. Some women use wire coat-hanger in attempt to remove the fetus or try to pierce the fetus using a knitting needle, crochet hook, hat pin or a bobby pin.

And even if unsafe abortions are rare in the western world, they are not completely absent. In Europe a woman cannot have an abortion at all if she lives in Malta (or Vatican). Monaco, Andorra and San Marino allow abortion only in case the woman’s life is in danger. UK, Finland, Iceland, Poland and Lichtenstein also have some limitation.
In America abortion is legal but it is hard to get it done.

Women on Web is a non-profit online abortion service based in the Netherlands that provides women abortion pills in countries where abortion is illegal. They exist since 2005 and what they do is send you abortion pills by mail and you can use them in the privacy of your own home. This method is approved by the World Health Organization and is proven to be effective in 95% of all cases.

And while they are mostly working with women living in countries where abortion is illegal, they are also delivering the abortion pills to some countries with legal abortion service. That is necessary because even if abortion is legal, it can be hardly accessible especially to women from poorer background.

Desperate woman with no safe and legal exit from undesirable situation is likely to expose herself to serious and very dangerous risks. Current medical procedures, on the other hand, are significantly safer than any traditional at-home methods. Actually, they are even safer than childbirth!
